About The Course

PADI Enriched Air Diver, often referred to as "Nitrox Diver," is a scuba diving certification offered by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This certification allows divers to use enriched air, also known as nitrox, as a breathing gas while diving. Enriched air contains a higher percentage of oxygen (typically between 32% and 40%) compared to regular air, which has around 21% oxygen. The increased oxygen content in nitrox can extend a diver's no-decompression limits, potentially allowing for longer dives or shorter surface intervals.

What You Will Learn

Here are some key aspects of the PADI Enriched Air Diver course:

  1. Theory and Knowledge: During the course, divers learn about the benefits and potential risks associated with using enriched air. You'll study topics such as oxygen exposure limits, how to analyze the nitrox mix in your scuba tank, and how to plan dives using enriched air to maximize safety.
  2. Practical Training: You'll gain hands-on experience in analyzing nitrox tanks to ensure they contain the correct mixture and learn how to set your dive computer or dive tables for nitrox dives.
  3. Safety Considerations: Safety is a primary focus of the course. You'll learn about the potential risks of oxygen toxicity, which can occur if you exceed safe oxygen exposure limits.
  4. Dive Planning: You'll discover how to plan nitrox dives, including calculating your maximum operating depth, determining your no-decompression limits, and planning for contingencies.
  5. Certification: After completing the knowledge development and practical training, you'll take a final exam and, upon successful completion, receive your PADI Enriched Air Diver certification card.
  6. Dive Opportunities: With the Enriched Air Diver certification, you can enjoy the benefits of diving with nitrox on various dive trips, potentially extending your bottom time and enhancing your overall diving experience.

Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery may require you to get written approval from a physician before diving.

Avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course. Instructors, divemasters and dive shop staff are not physicians and should not be asked for medical advice; only medical professionals can give medical clearance to dive.

If you (or your physician) have questions about medical fitness to dive, contact the experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN).
