PADI Open Water Diver is the first scuba certification level. One of our highly-trained PADI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.
By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and knowledge to dive at home or abroad and be an ambassador for the underwater world.
There are 3 steps you need to complete in order to become a certified diver:
- STEP 1: Knowledge development
- STEP 2: Confined Water Dives
- STEP 3: Open Water Dives
STEP 1. Knowledge Development
The Knowledge Development portion of the course is designed so you can learn at your own pace and when it’s convenient for you. This part of your course will teach you the basic principles of scuba diving, and you will cover things like basic dive theory, equipment, skills and dive planning.
If you want to complete this step first and upgrade to the rest of the course later on, you can book the PADI Open Water Diver eLearning separately here!
STEP 2. Confined Water Dives
Develop and practice scuba skills in a pool under direct instructor supervision. As you learn new skills, you’ll build the abilities and confidence needed for diving in open water, such as in a quarry or the ocean.
You will complete 2 pool sessions altogether, including a drysuit orientation, which will prepare you for using a drysuit during your open water dives.
STEP 3. Open Water Dives
You would then complete you open water dives at a PADI dive centre abroad of your choice.
As soon as your open water training dives are approved by your instructor, you will be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver, ready to embark on unforgettable adventures!

The Learning Materials
Prerequisites - PADI Open Water Diver
To enroll in a PADI Open Water Diver,
- You must be at least 15 years old, or 10 years for PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification.
- You need to be in good physical health and comfortable in the water.
No prior experience with snorkeling, skin diving or freediving is required.
Our experiences and courses require a minimum level of health and fitness. Chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery may require you to get written approval from a physician before diving.
Avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course. Instructors, divemasters and dive shop staff are not physicians and should not be asked for medical advice; only medical professionals can give medical clearance to dive.
If you (or your physician) have questions about medical fitness to dive, contact the experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN), or your own Doctor.
You will not be able to participate in any pool or open water sessions without confirming your fitness to dive.
If the above points are not adhered to no later than 14 days before the start of your course, it will greatly slow down the course for yourself and the other students.
For this reason, if the effort and commitment has not been made, you will be assigned another course and an additional cost of £75 may be charged. In the event you do not book another course date, no refund will be made.
